Ledger® Live Guide

Ledger® Live: Desktop | Getting Started with Ledgér | Lédger

Your secure portal to manage, exchange, and grow your crypto assets with confidence.

1. Welcome & Overview

Welcome to the definitive guide for Ledger Live Desktop. Ledger Live is the companion application for your Ledger hardware wallet, providing a secure and convenient interface to manage over 5,500 coins and tokens. This guide will walk you through the essential steps, from initial device setup to advanced asset management.

Key Security Principle

NEVER share your 24-word Recovery Phrase with anyone. Ledger will never ask for it. All transactions MUST be verified directly on your physical Ledger device.

2. Ledger Device Setup

2.1 Prerequisites: What You'll Need

  • Your Ledger device (Nano S Plus, Nano X, etc.)
  • The provided USB cable
  • A pen and the Recovery Sheet (for the 24 words)
  • A working desktop computer (Windows 10+, macOS 10.15+, or Linux)

2.2 Initializing Your Device (New Setup)

The first step involves setting up a PIN code and writing down your unique 24-word **Recovery Phrase**. Follow the on-screen instructions on the device and Ledger Live simultaneously.

STEP 1: Set PIN

STEP 2: Write Down Recovery Phrase (Crucial step!)

STEP 3: Confirm Recovery Phrase

2.3 Restoring from an Existing Seed

If you are migrating an existing wallet, you will select the 'Restore' option. You will be prompted to enter your 24-word phrase on the device itself. This process ensures your keys are never exposed to the computer.

3. Using Ledger Live Desktop

3.1 Installation and First Launch

Download Ledger Live only from the official Ledger website. Avoid third-party sources. Once installed, launch the application and connect your initialized Ledger device. The application will guide you through connecting and authenticating your device.

PRO TIP: Always keep Ledger Live updated. Use the official link to download the latest version for improved security and new features.

3.2 Device Authenticity and PIN Lock

Ledger Live performs an automatic **Genuine Check** when you connect your device, verifying that it is an official Ledger product. Furthermore, you can set up a Ledger Live application lock password, which is separate from your device's PIN, for an added layer of desktop security.

4. Managing Your Crypto Assets

4.1 Installing Applications on Your Device

To manage a specific cryptocurrency (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana), you must install its corresponding application on your Ledger device via the Manager tab in Ledger Live.

Once the app is installed, you can **Add Account** in the Portfolio section of Ledger Live to generate receiving addresses linked to your device.

4.2 Sending and Receiving Funds

  • Receiving: Click the Receive button. Ledger Live will ask you to verify the receiving address on your physical Ledger screen. Always confirm the address shown on the device matches the one in Ledger Live.
  • Sending: Click the Send button. After entering the recipient address and amount, the transaction details will appear on your device. You must manually confirm the details (address, amount, fees) on the Ledger device to authorize the transaction.

4.3 Staking, Swapping, and Other Services

Ledger Live integrates various services, allowing you to stake supported assets (like ETH, DOT, or ATOM) directly through the platform to earn rewards, or swap between different cryptocurrencies securely. All critical actions requiring your private keys are still signed and authorized by your Ledger device.

5. Troubleshooting Common Issues

"Device not recognized"

Ensure Ledger Live is closed, unplug and re-plug the USB cable, and then reopen the application. If issues persist, try a different USB port or cable.

"Transaction failed / Insufficient funds"

Check that the total amount being sent plus the network fee is less than your available balance. Fees are mandatory for network processing.
